How I Land 2-3 Freelance Clients a Month with Cold DMs (+ 30 Scripts)
Every month I send somewhere between 40 and 60 cold DMs. About 8 to 12 of them get a real reply. Of those, 5 or 6 turn into actual conversations. And 2 to 3 become paying clients. Those aren't spectacular numbers — but they're consistent, and consistency is what pays rent.
The mistake most freelancers make isn't sending too few DMs. It's sending the same bad DM over and over and wondering why it doesn't work.
Why 90% of Cold DMs Get Ignored
Here's what a bad cold DM looks like: "Hey, I noticed your business and I think I could really help you grow. I'm a web developer with 5 years of experience. Would love to hop on a call!" Nobody reads past the first sentence. Here's why:
- It opens with "I". The person receiving it doesn't care about you yet. They care about themselves.
- It's vague. "Help you grow" means nothing. What specifically would you help with?
- It asks for a call immediately. That's a big commitment from someone who's never heard of you.
- It sounds like everyone else. If your message could be sent to 1000 different people unchanged, it reads like spam.
The fix isn't a better template — it's a different approach entirely. The best cold DMs feel like a message from someone who actually looked at your profile and noticed something specific.
The Framework That Works
Every effective cold DM I send follows the same structure: Notice → Connect → Offer → Ask.
Notice something specific and genuine about their work. A recent post, a project they launched, a problem they mentioned publicly. This is the hardest part and the most important. If you can't find something real to notice, don't send the DM.
Connect that observation to something you can do. Not generically — specifically. "I saw you're posting Reels but not converting them to clients, and I've helped 3 coaches fix exactly that" lands very differently than "I could help your social media."
Offer something small and low-commitment first. A quick audit, a specific insight, a resource. Don't lead with a sales pitch. Lead with value.
Ask for something tiny. "Would a 3-point audit of your current funnel be useful?" is a much easier yes than "Want to jump on a call?"

Most freelancers send one DM, get no reply, and move on. That's leaving serious money on the table. Research consistently shows that 60% of deals close after the 4th or 5th contact. Yet most people give up after one.
The key to follow-up is adding value each time, not just bumping the thread. A follow-up that says "Just checking in!" is annoying. A follow-up that says "Hey, saw you just launched a new offer — here's one thing I'd change about the landing page copy" is welcome.
My follow-up sequence looks like this:
- Day 3: Value-add bump (share something relevant to their situation)
- Day 10: Different angle (if the first message was about their website, this one's about their content strategy)
- Day 21: The "break-up" message (this one gets replies surprisingly often)
What to Do When They Object
The three most common objections you'll hear: "too expensive," "not right now," and "already working with someone." None of these are dead ends if you handle them right.
"Too expensive" usually means "I don't see the value yet." The answer isn't to lower your price — it's to reframe what they're buying. Tie the investment to a specific outcome they care about.
"Not right now" is often real, not a brush-off. Get a specific date and follow up on it. "When would be a better time? I'll reach back out then." Then actually do it.
"Already working with someone" doesn't close the door. Ask what their current setup looks like, listen, and plant a seed. People switch vendors all the time. If you're helpful in the conversation, you're the first call when things go wrong with their current provider.
The scripts in The Cold DM Playbook cover exact responses for each of these scenarios — not generic advice, but word-for-word messages you can adapt and send.
The bottom line
Cold DM outreach works when it's specific, consistent, and respectful of people's time. The freelancers who say it doesn't work are usually the ones sending generic blasts. The ones who use it to build $5k–$15k/month client bases are doing something fundamentally different. The 30 scripts in this pack show you exactly what.
